Originally, all the loose stones lying around were parts of the rock walls around the Schlucher. Wind and weather, ice and snow attack the rock faces and disintegrate. This process is called weathering. We find limestone, dolomites, gypsum and roughage in this stream bed, but also rarer radiolarites. These have a completely different history of formation than the other rocks. They do not come from a shallow sea under a desert climate, but from the deep sea.
The red sandstones in the stream barriers are also interesting. Although they do not occur in Malbun, they can be found not far from here in Valorschtal, Valünatal and Triesenberg. At 250 million years old, they are the oldest sedimentary rocks in the Tethys Sea and date back to the time when it began to open. They consist of petrified sand that has been washed from the nearby mainland into the shallow sea.

All rocks in this stream bed belong to the rock group of depositional rocks. They were once deposited on the seabed as loose material such as sand, gravel or mud and later hardened into stone. Due to continental drift and mountain formation, rocks that were once on the surface are sometimes pressed deep into the Earth's interior. In the process, they change. This is how transformation rocks are formed. Over millions of years, any parent rock can be transformed by such processes. Thus, the rocks are in a continuous cycle.
