Switzerland's longest wooden bridge
The region was already well known to many travellers as far back as the Middle Ages. Lake Zurich lies on the route of the pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela, who passed through Rapperswil on their way. Back then, a rickety, winding wooden footbridge with loosely laid planks provided a crossing over the lake. Since the 19th century, a causeway has allowed the lake to be crossed at its narrowest point between Rapperswil and Hurden. And since 2001, an equally winding, 841-metre-long, modern wooden bridge has stood on the site of the old footbridge.
Across Lake Zurich on a paddle steamer
Historic paddle steamers on Lake Zurich evoke a nostalgic atmosphere with their sparkling navigation lights, polished wooden decks, elegant saloons and the steady rhythm of the steam engines. A cruise aboard these classic vessels offers a memorable way to experience the lake, with views of the working engine room and rotating paddle wheels adding to the charm. Many themed boats also invite guests to enjoy culinary specialities, ranging from schnitzel to traditional fondue experiences.
