Walensee

Fjord-like lake between the cantons of St.Gallen and Glarus in the Heidiland region. Directly accessible by rail (including Unterterzen/Walenstadt); boats connect the lakeside villages. Highlights include the car-free hamlet of Quinten, Seerenbach Falls, and the sheer cliffs of the Churfirsten range.

Framed by the sheer Churfirsten cliffs and charming lakeside villages, Lake Walen (Walensee) is Heidiland’s alpine fjord – ideal for spur‑of‑the‑moment swims and active days out.

On the water you’ll find lakeside lidos and bathing beaches, sunbathing lawns and quiet coves; stand‑up paddleboarding (SUP) and kayak hire, sailing, windsurfing and leisurely boat cruises put you right at the heart of it. On land, the Walensee Circular Trail and panoramic high‑level paths lead to classics such as Seerenbach Falls/Betlis and to the car‑free hamlet of Quinten with its vineyards, fig trees and sun‑drenched terraces.

Families will find playgrounds, pushchair‑friendly lakeside sections and short circular walks; food lovers can look forward to fresh fish and local wines with lake views.

Unterterzen is the gateway to Flumserberg.

The SeeJet gondola whisks you into the mountains in minutes – in summer for hiking trails, bike trails, a summer toboggan run and climbing activities; in winter for pistes, winter walks and sledging.

Thanks to excellent public transport links (stations right by the lake) and regular boat services, it’s easy to combine water and mountain experiences – from a gentle stroll to a full, active day on and around the lake.
