The Abbey Library in Einsiedeln Abbey holds over 1000 years of history.

The Abbey Library is a typical monastery library and closely linked to the history of Einsiedeln Abbey. You can visit the "Great Library" as part of a guided tour of the monastery. It is an early Rococo hall, a showpiece of the monastery and a cultural asset worth seeing.

In addition to the Holy Scriptures, there is an enormous amount of spiritual and theological knowledge as well as history, philosophy, law, natural sciences and medicine. The library contains manuscripts and books from the 10th century, the time when the monastery was founded. Today's holdings include around 1,200 manuscripts, 1,100 cradle prints and early prints, as well as a further 230,000 printed volumes from the centuries 16 to 20.
