Station 10 Geologiepfad Malbun: Das Sass-Fürkle ein kleiner Alpenpass

The Sass-Fürkle is a pass between the Malbuntal and the Valorschtal. Like the large Alpine passes, it was ground out by glaciers during the Ice Age. Under the meadows and pines here there are still moraines everywhere, which bear witness to this. The glaciers did not choose this crossing by chance. They ground away the original ridge between the two valleys, where the rock offered the least resistance.

The Sass-Fürkle is located on the border zone between two large rock plates, the Heubühl-Schönbergscholle in the west and the Ochsenkopf-Fundelkopf-Scholle in the east. The floes were tectonically shifted against each other during the uplift of the Alps. The rock at the border zone is weakened by numerous fractures and the glaciers were able to use their tools more easily here.
