Schloss Hauptwil (Hauptwil Castle)
Built between 1664 and 1665, Hauptwil Castle is an impressive example of 17th-century architecture and represents the social status of the Gonzenbach family at the time, which was one of the richest merchant families in Switzerland. The castle served not only as a residence, but also as a lower court and business seat and had a chapel in the cellar vaults, which was later converted into a garden hall.
From 1891 to 1951, a housekeeping school of the non-profit society of the canton of Thurgau was operated in the castle, after which it served as a nursing and care centre. Today, Hauptwil Castle is known for its beautiful gardens and serves as a venue for private and business events. In addition, the castle offers living and working spaces with a unique combination of historical ambience and modern equipment.
The architecture of the palace remains true to the style of the late Renaissance, but also shows playful and artistic details such as the numerous stucco work and the ceiling painting in the chapel, which is based on the fresco in the stairwell of the Würzburg Residence. These historic features were carefully preserved during the recently completed restoration, which took over 150,000 hours of work, and supplemented with state-of-the-art technology.
