Sankt Magdalena Steinegg

Mary Magdalene (22 July)

East-facing chapel on the main road Appenzell-Weissbad, directly at the Steinegg crossroads.

The eastern parts of the old chapel with the choir closing on three sides have been preserved. Extended west section of the nave, façade and omens since 1957. Inside there is a suspended gallery, a hipped ceiling and a new altar with a wooden panel painting by J. Hugentobler. Since 1937 the two bells have been hanging in the tower; the larger one is dedicated to Mary Magdalene and the smaller one to St. Joseph. They were cast by F. Hamm in Staad. The chapel has 80-85 seats on the ground floor and 20-25 seats on the gallery, an organ and an electric locking system.

History
In "Ueberibrugg", as the area was called at the time, there was a chapel as early as 1550, but without permission for mass celebrations. As early as 1588, this permission came and the feast of Mary Magdalene was declared an obligatory holiday. On 24 July 1590, the auxiliary bishop of Constance consecrated the altar and consecrated the first bell. In 1634 and 1642, the chapel was enlarged. In 1680, the gallery was built in and renovations took place in 1704/05. Special patrons at that time were Ensign Joh. Sonderegger and his wife. Their coats of arms were therefore attached to the vestibule; since the renovation in 1946/47, they have been located at the back of the right side wall. The importance of the chapel increased over the years. In 1776 there was even a pulpit. In 1800 the chapel was enlarged and in 1889 important repairs were made. In 1946/47 the chapel was enlarged under the construction supervision of Johannes Hugentobler; it was consecrated on 6 September 1947 and Hugentobler painted the altarpiece, Easter morning and the ornamental ceiling. The baroque altar with 4 Corinthian columns was destroyed. In 1997 the chapel was restored inside and a new sign was created. The last interior renovation took place in 1992 with a new organ by Eugen Hauser.
