Sankt Anna Haggenbrugg

St. Anna (26 July)

The most beautiful rococo chapel in Innerrhoden stands at a traffic bottleneck at the new Haggen bridge on the road from Appenzell to Steinegg.

Inside there is a magnificent rococo altar, one of the most beautiful in our country, with statues on the left and right. Inside the chapel there are prayer benches for 12 people in front of the end grille. The small wooden gallery with baluster railing dates from 1855. The chapel is closed.

History
As a forerunner of the chapel, a wayside shrine has probably stood there since the beginning of the first bridge construction. Around 1700, the wayside shrine was expanded into a chapel, for which a bell was cast in 1709 by Johann App in Feldkirch. In 1767, the chapel was renovated and significantly enlarged by the Streule family of caretakers. The local carver Joseph Ulrich Hörler created the altar with the valuable side altars. In 1854-1858 a renovation took place, in 1887 the chapel was repainted, and in 1894 a new choir grille was created by locksmith Sutter. In 1950, the last renovation to date took place by the painter Johannes Hugentobler. The decorative paintings from the 19th century were removed and a new roof turret was added. In 2000, maintenance work was carried out on the chapel and the roof was renovated. After the new Haggen Bridge was built, the chapel was repainted inside and out in autumn 2010.
