Ruine Neutoggenburg
Neutoggenburg was the last ancestral seat of the Counts of Toggenburg, who ruled the area from 1044 to 1468. It is located high above the top of the Wasserfluh pass and offers a wide panoramic view. With over 200 plant species, some of which are rare, its surroundings are also an interesting nature reserve.
In the 15th century, the castle fell into oblivion and was left to decay. It was also exploited as a quarry in the 19th century. The former castle of the counts was only excavated and preserved around 1936/37. The finds made at that time, such as bones, ceramics, keys or dagger blades, are exhibited in the Toggenburg Museum in Lichtensteig. From the ruins you can still see the ring wall with the castle gate, the foundation walls and traces of two cisterns.
The ruin is freely accessible. The hiking trail from Brunnadern (2h) or Lichtensteig (1h) is well signposted. A small fire pit is available.
