The medieval ruin of Neuburg above Mammern is not only the most important and largest castle complex on the southern shore of the Untersee, it is also best preserved. Thanks to the barbecue area and play facilities, it is not only very popular with walkers.
Around the middle of the 13th century, the Barons of Klingen acquired the
still standing keep and the palace, the castle was mentioned for the first time in a document in 1274. Together with Hohenklingen ob Stein am Rhein, the new castle served to monitor trade on the Untersee. From the 14th century onwards, the Neuburg experienced numerous changes of ownership. Until the 17th century, the complex was also repeatedly expanded and rebuilt.
The history of what was once the largest castle on Lake Untersee is vividly explained on two display boards. There is a driving ban on the road to the castle, so it can only be reached on foot.
