Ruine Helfenberg
The ruins of Helfenberg provide insights into the medieval history of Thurgau. The first written mentions come from a St. Gallen document at the beginning of the 14th century, from 1413 only one castle stable is reported, which indicates limited habitability. The complex is located in the Seebach valley and is part of regional history tours that lead from the prehistoric settlements on Lake Nussbaumersee to the Roman Villa Stutheien. Archaeological investigations by the Thurgau Office of Archaeology in the 1980s unearthed ceramic fragments and a bronze oval buckle, some finds date back to around 1200 and indicate that the castle was built over 100 years before it was first mentioned in writing. In 1981/82 and 2010/11 the ruins were renovated.
