The parish church of Gonten stands in the centre of the village and is located directly on the main road from Appenzell to Urnäsch.
The neo-Gothic church interior is characterized in the choir by the altarpiece of the high altar, created in 1846 by Anton Klarer. The ceiling paintings by Lenggenhager show the birth, death and resurrection of Christ. The overall appearance of the neo-Gothic church interior includes the group of three carved altars; the high altar by Anton Klarer was created in 1864. Stained glass cycle from 1927. 340 seats and another 60 on the gallery.
History
Some sparse sources show that the ecclesiastical centre of Gonten developed from a "Bildle an der Landstrass" to a chapel to a parish church. In December 1453, a chapel with two altars was consecrated. In the years between 1472 and 1507 it must have been renovated or renewed. In 1582, a new building was built. In 1600, the Gontners decided to rebuild the church tower. In 1606, a tower clock was installed. In 1623/24 the chapel was renovated and extended. 1634 Casting of a new bell. 1635 Consecration of two side altars. In 1647, the church was expanded and renewed again. 1670 Installation of an organ, 1697 casting of a bell, 1717 casting of another bell, 1776 acquisition of a baptismal font. From 1746 to 1754 the altars and tabernacles were renewed. Due to population growth and poor condition, the entire church had to be rebuilt in 1863-1865 according to plans by Joseph Spalt. On September 12, 1866, the new parish church was consecrated. Due to a renovation in 1972/73, the parish church has largely lost its character as a neo-Gothic village cathedral. The former double gallery was replaced by a simple one; a new organ came from Überlingen and a new bell with four bells from Rüetschi Aarau in 1927. In 1979, the tower had to be renovated again.
