Naturschutzgebiet Hudelmoos
The Hudelmoos Nature Reserve is home to a rich variety of plant and animal species and is an actual hotspot of biodiversity. Located about three kilometres above Amriswil, the area is accessible via several paths. Nature can be experienced up close.
In 1992, 40 birds, 210 butterflies, 29 dragonflies, 348 vascular plants, 98 mosses and 298 fungi were listed in a monograph in this raised bog. The logical consequence was that the Hudelmoos was included in the "Federal Inventory of Raised and Transitional Bogs of National Importance".
It wasn't always so contemplative: the increasing need for energy and industrialization in the 18th century led to massive peat extraction in many places, and peat was cut until the middle of the 20th century. As a result of this degradation, only about 30 hectares of the original moor remain today.
