Mittelbüel-|-Kapelle Hinterkau

St. George (23 April)

On the Gonten-Hinterkau freight road, which was built in 1959; is easily accessible via Gontenbad Reeb.

A brick, rectangular chapel with a slate-covered gable roof and a half-open wooden turret with a bell and  a shingled and broken round pointed helmet since 1906. The bell used to hang in the Lourdes Chapel and was cast in 1728 by Franz J. Felix in Feldkirch. The rural altar in Renaissance and Baroque form dates from 1737. The main picture, a rural wooden painting from the first half of the 18th century, shows St. George and St. James. Two narrow wooden panels with St. Barbara and St. John the Evangelist were painted in 1790. The chapel also includes a wax image of the Sorrowful Mother of God from 1700, a wooden reliquary from 1790, two rare vases with tin bouquets from around 1800 and an ornamental hanging basket from around 1830. Inside there are two benches; the chapel is closed.

History
The small chapel of St. George was first mentioned in a document in 1630. In 1660 a new building was built; larger and smaller repairs were carried out by the owners of the Mittelbüel property on an ongoing basis, as well as exterior renovations by the residents of Hinterkau. A major renovation took place in 1906 under Pastor Räss. Soon afterwards the chapel received a bell. In 2004 the chapel underwent a comprehensive exterior and interior renovation. The two side wings of the altar were removed and refreshed. Adalbert Fässler sen. renovated the altarpiece; in 2010 a new pointed helmet.
