Mariabergstrasse
The lower part of Mariabergstrasse to the crossing Kirchstrasse was formerly called Hengart. Rich Rorschach merchant families lived here – such as those of Bayers or Hoffmanns. Only Prince Abbot Beda Angehrn had the continuation of Mariabergstrasse built up to the monastery building around 1780.
Mariabergstrasse 11: The impressive half-timbered house was built in 1672 by the merchant family Hoffmann von Leuchtenstern, the year can be read above the beautiful Renaissance portal. Inside the house, however, the year 1640 suggests an older origin of the house. At the back towards Engelgasse is a mighty sandstone portal, partly sunk into the ground

Salvinihaus (Mariabergstrasse 15): This manor house, whose French gardens have been used to this day; Stadthof, was included in Volume 3 of the historic town houses of Switzerland. Master builder Franz Haag built it for cavalry captain Lorenzo Salvini around 1789. On the second floor there is a lavishly painted banqueting hall. The furniture of the hall can now be seen in the museum in the Kornhaus.
