Lourdes-Kapelle Appenzell

Our Lady of Lourdes (February 11)

Beautifully renovated chapel in the village of Appenzell on a small hill above the indoor swimming pool and the Sitterstrasse.

Larger, simple chapel with steep gable roof, closed sign and six-sided roof turret from 1891; two bells from 1593 and 1621 hang in it. The choir is characterized by the Grotto of the Mother of God and a valuable rococo cross  from 1760 from the old church in Schwende.  In the prayer room there are 12 benches of 3 - 4 seats each  and a small gallery with an electronic organ. The chapel has electric bench heating.

History
The chapel was built in 1594 as an infirmary chapel and dedicated to St. Martin and St. Elisabeth of Thuringia. The scroll altar by Jakob Girtanner from 1597 is now in the local history museum. From 1760, the chapel served as a poorhouse chapel. In 1891, new arched windows with stained glass followed. After the construction of the new poorhouse, the chapel was closed in 1904 and used as a storage room. In 1936, the newly founded Lourdes Association took care of the chapel and set up a Lourdes grotto there. Since then, it has served as the Lourdes Chapel. Today, the canton is responsible again. In 1948/49, a larger sign was created. In 2000, a comprehensive interior and exterior renovation was carried out by architect Erich Ladner from Rheineck.
