Klosterkirche St. Remigius
St. Remigius is the parish church of the former Benedictine convent in Münsterlingen, which today houses the cantonal hospital. As a special feature, a bust of St. John can be visited, which is carried to the German Hagnau and back at Seegfrörni.
According to legend, the monastery was founded by the daughter of the English King Edward I. The monastery church of St. Remigius is a remarkable example of Vorarlberg Baroque architecture and has a well-structured tower shape made of sandstone blocks.
The solemn procession with the wooden bust of St. John, which can be seen at the entrance to the church, has a great tradition. Since 1573, it has been migrating across the lake to Hagnau in Germany and back – if the lake freezes and the ice is thick enough. The last time it moved to Münsterlingen was in 1963 and since a Seegfrostni often takes over a hundred years to come, the bust will probably be admired in St. Remigius for a long time to come.
