Kloster Wonnenstein
The church decoration consists mainly of a Pietà from the 15th century, probably the most important late Gothic sculpture in Innerrhoden. The altar cross dates from around 1700 and two Val Gardena statutes from around 1900.
The famous "Black Madonna" is an image of the miraculous image of "Our Lady" of Einsiedeln. A document attests to the exact replica of the "Black Madonna of Wonnenstein" and its solemn consecration by Abbot Celestine on 4 November 1834. It was placed in the sisters' choir. As a result of the disturbance of the monastic peace by the pilgrims, it was placed in the left side altar in 1929. Today it attracts many believers to silent prayer.
History
The beginnings of Wonnenstein go back to the early 13th century. Around 1381, the St. Gallen abbot Kuno von Stoffeln gave some forest sisters a farmstead belonging to the monastery. A small chapel was built early on. A major fire in 1456 destroyed the sisters' house and the chapel. But already on 3 August 1456 the rebuilt chapel could be consecrated.
Until 1476, the sisters of St. Laurenzen were parish in St. Gallen. In 1479, the people of Teufen built their own church and parish. Now the sisters of Wonnenstein were cared for by the parish of Teufen.
Today's monastery church and monastery buildings were built between 1685 and 1688. First the confessional's house and the convent buildings were built, and finally the monastery church, as their ground served as a quarry for the construction work. The narrowness of the building ground and the denominational island location determined the small dimensions of the monastery church to only four window axes.
Probably the most far-reaching change to the church interior took place in 1928 and 1929 by the architect August Auf der Mauer: On the occasion of this reconstruction phase, the wall between the chancel and the nave was broken through and the former choir arch was completely dismantled. This renovation of 1928 is judged rather critically today, especially because of the strong change in the spatial and conceptual situation.
In 2022-2024, the church underwent a complete renovation, in which the mistakes of the renovation of 1928 were also partially reversed.
In its structural design, the church of the Wonnenstein monastery exemplifies the principles of the Franciscan order. The focus is not on representation and splendour, as can be found, for example, in many churches of the Benedictine order. Rather, the church testifies to modesty without sacrificing atmospheric density.
