The pilgrimage church is part of the Leiden Christi monastery and is located in Jakobsbad on the main road from Gonten to Urnäsch.
On the ridge of the hipped gable roof sits the square bell tower with onion dome. The former altar was re-erected in the sacristy in 1940. The miraculous image is a Pietà, the representation of the Sorrowful Mother of God. The church has 130 seats.
History
As early as 1676, Hans Gmünder bequeathed a bequest to a Chappeli in Stechlenegg, where the monastery stands today. The name Passion of Christ appears for the first time in 1687. After the death of Captain Uli Neff, the chapel passed on to his son. The owners had the chapel built out of gratitude for the help they received years ago in a serious matter. On July 31, 1848, the first Holy Mass was celebrated in the renovated chapel.
On 3 April 1851, Maria Rosa Bättig, together with some fellow sisters, was able to acquire the "Sägenweidli" for her future monastery foundation. The then pastor of Gonten had the Chapel of the Sorrows of Christ, which was visited by pilgrims, renovated again and an altar installed. The foundation stone for the monastery was laid on 18 March 1853 and on 14 July the monastery church was erected, which was consecrated in 1854. In 1891 the monastery church was renovated. Later, the painter Johannes Hugentobler rebuilt a roof turret with the former bell. While retaining the previous floor plan, the monastery church was rebuilt by Johann Thürlemann from 1889 to 1891. The interior is neo-Gothic. From 1925 to 1930, the Chapel of the Holy Blood was built, which Johannes Hugentobler designed. In 1937, the church received a new bell with four bells. In 1981/82, the church was restored by Hans Morant under the supervision of the Federal Commission for the Preservation of Monuments.
