Kirche St. Pelagius

The church of St. Pelagius characterises the townscape of Bischofszell and dates from the 14th and 15th centuries. From 1535 to 1968, the Pelagius Church served as an equal place of worship for both Christian denominations.
St. Pelagius was originally built as the church of the Pelagius Monastery, which one of the bishops Solomon founded in the second half of the 10th century as a spiritual center halfway between the episcopal city of Constance and the Benedictine Abbey of St. Gallen. This is how the resulting later town of Bischofszell ("Bishop's cell") got its name. The patron saint of the church is St. Pelagius from Hungary, who was beheaded at the age of 25 because he refused to renounce the Christian faith.
