Johann in der Wildnis-Kapelle

St. Johann in der Wildnis (24 June)

The somewhat forgotten chapel stands in the forest ravine of the upper Bleichewäldlibach, on the old path from the Guggerloch to Gais. The location lives up to the name.

It is a white, architecturally insignificant prayer house with a gable roof, without a turret. A wooden plaque above the entrance names the donors. In front of the chapel there are two benches and a babbling fountain. The interior of the chapel is kept very simple with a narrow altar with pictures of saints.

The chapel is closed; inside there is a kneeling bench for two people.

History

A sign in the gable triangle testifies to the founders of the chapel, which was built in 1845, Johann Baptist Speck and his wife Seraphine Koller von Meistersrüte. According to tradition, the woman is said to have once wandered around in a state of mental confusion and the husband promised to build a chapel where he would find her again.

In the meantime, the chapel has been renovated and repaired several times. It also received a new roof.
