Im Bild-Kapelle Wasserauen

Jesus, Mary and Joseph (Sunday after Christmas)

A little off the beaten track, on the left-bank valley path from Schwende to Wasserauen, the devotional chapel stands as a pretty gem.

The almost square building (3.7 × 3.6 m) with a turret has a vaulted interior with a vaulted panelled ceiling. On the altar-like pedestal stands a late Gothic crucifixion group (from 1600) made of lime wood with Christ, Mary and John. In the chapel there is also a self-carved St. Anna made of lime wood from around 1510, a reverse glass painting of Christ on the Cross with St. Magdalene (first half of the 19th century) and the donor's wooden panel from 1839. The figures are extremely valuable from an art-historical point of view and were restored to their original condition in 2010. The chapel is closed.

History

The chapel stands on the spot where a picture stood as early as 1608 and then the first chapel "All Saints". From 1620 donations to this chapel are known. In 1635 the chapel was rebuilt. After the branch church Schwende was built in 1767, the old chapel lost its importance, was neglected and finally demolished. At the site of the demolished chapel a wayside shrine was erected. Due to lack of maintenance, this was later also demolished.

When the property owner Franz Anton Dörig fell seriously ill in 1837, he promised to rebuild the demolished chapel at his own expense when he recovered. He recovered and had the devotional chapel of Jesus Mary and Joseph built on the old foundation walls in 1838/39. A renovation took place in 1899. The outlines of the old larger chapel (floor elevation 8 x 6 m) are still visible today.

After it was last extensively renovated, it was re-inaugurated on 14 August 2010.
