Halten-Kapelle

St. Jakob (25 July)

On the Halten property on the left side of the Alte Eggerstandenstrasse.

Inside the chapel (2.5 x 3.3 m) there is a baroque wooden statue of St. James. Here he is not depicted as a pilgrim, but as a herald with a book. He wears a dress with deeply hollowed transverse folds and a shell covered cloak. The statue dates from 1680. The altar was refreshed by Adalbert Fässler and Son. The chapel is closed. The two body boards of the Neffs inside the chapel were discovered in the roof truss during the demolition of the old chapel. They were probably removed during the construction of the new house (1853) and brought to the chapel belonging to the property.

History

The wayside shrine "Bild uff der Halten St. Jacoben" was first mentioned in 1660. At that time, pilgrims stopped there on their return from Rankweil before they saw the village of Appenzell again. As a sign of the rest stop, the wayside shrine was created. Around 1700, the administrator was Peter Fritschi der kline, Halten. In 1898, the first renovation took place.

Before the Alte Eggerstandenstrasse was built, the wayside shrine stood further south, namely exactly in the middle of today's street. It was therefore replaced by a new chapel. In 2003, the chapel had to make way for the widening of the street again and was rebuilt by the property owner a few meters to the northwest. The inauguration took place on May 11, 2003.
