Geburtshaus Huldrych Zwingli

Huldrych Zwingli, the most important reformer in German-speaking Switzerland, was born on New Year's morning 1484 in Wildhaus. Until the age of six, he grew up surrounded by a large group of siblings in the Tätschhaus, a wooden rope building with a very flat roof, built around 1450. His father's office is particularly worth seeing because of the ceiling decorated with late Gothic carvings. After primary school years in Weesen, Latin schools in Basel and Bern and studies in Vienna and Basel, Zwingli was ordained a priest at the age of 22. There he worked as a theologian, social reformer and politician and laid the foundation for the Zurich Reformation, which found its breakthrough from 1523 onwards and finally – with the exception of the cantons of Central Switzerland – covered the whole of German-speaking Switzerland. Zwingli died in 1531 at the age of almost 48 in the 2nd Kappl (Religious) War. Zwingli's birthplace and Zwingli fountain, the latter at the site of the hotel's own spring, still commemorate the famous Wildhausen citizen. Comprehensive literature on the subject of the Reformation with a focus on Zwingli can also be found in the new Zwingli Library, which is attached to the birthplace. In a special exhibition starting on 20 December 2016, visitors will learn interesting facts about Zwingli's homeland, his life and work, and the effects of his renewal efforts on a national and international level.
