Führungen in der Klosterkirche
Visit the baroque monastery church in Neu St. Johann with its monastery library, Charles Chapel, tower clock, high altar, sacristy, Abrederis and Grass organs and the belfry. On request and in consultation, an organ concert is also possible.
The church of Neu St. Johann is not only an artistic monument, but also an impressive historical testimony to the confessional tensions that have prevailed in large parts of Toggenburg since the Reformation.
The monastery church, which today stands imposingly in the middle of Neu St. Johann, surrounded by gardens, quiet areas and the buildings of the Johanneum - an institution that uses parts of the monastery building - is a new foundation of the former monastery in Alt St. Johann. This burned down to a large extent in 1626, which is why the community decided to build a new building further down the valley, halfway between the old location and the valley of Wattwil. Construction work on the convent building, a four-winged complex similar to a monastery (including the Charles Chapel and the library corridor), lasted from 1626 to 1629. The church of the former priory is one of the most important buildings of the 17th century in the territory of today's Switzerland.
The building has recently undergone a restoration and now shines in fresh splendour. Let yourself be impressed.
