Cooperative Stadtufer
Lichtensteig is home to the Stadtufer cooperative. The current 180 members use around 8,000 square meters of factory space. In stages, the former spinning mill is being developed into a forward-looking living, working and cultural space.
There are workshops, studios, music and sports rooms with attractive offers on the site. The heart of the building is the "foyer" with an event room for up to 200 people. In the future, living space for a diverse tenant base will be created on site. The first mechanical spinning mill in Toggenburg was founded in this building on the banks of the Thur. The head building of the factory was built in 1819 and is considered a cultural object worthy of protection. In 1863, this part was expanded for the first time. In 1955, the current central and north building was built. In the best times of the textile factory, 320 people worked here. In 2017, Fein-Elast Grabher AG closed its doors in Lichtensteig. The municipality and the canton then supported the participatory development of a sustainable solution. This process resulted in the Stadtufer cooperative. Together with many public and private supporters, the cooperative was able to buy the factory in January 2021. The Edith Maryon Foundation, whose aim is to prevent land speculation, handed over the building rights to the cooperative for 90 years.
