Appenzeller| Alpenbitter AG
In 1902, the two Appenzellers Emil Ebneter and Beat Kölbener laid the foundation stone for Appenzeller Alpenbitter AG. They developed a natural product of excellent quality and incomparable aroma: Appenzeller Alpenbitter with 42 selected herbs. At the time, it was even recommended by doctors as a remedy.
Appenzeller Alpenbitter is made exclusively from natural ingredients. As far as possible, the family business sources herbs from farming families in the Appenzell area, such as lemon balm, lavender and peppermint. The original recipe for the speciality from Appenzell is still a well-kept secret of the founding family. Only two members of the family know it. Pascal Loepfe-Brügger, a member of the founding family, is the managing director of the traditional Appenzell company: He is the great-grandson of company founder Beat Kölbener.
The distillation of fine distillates has been a tradition in Appenzell for almost 125 years. "Like the two founders, we also cultivate our craft with great care. Quality is our top priority. We cultivate tradition and at the same time attach great importance to innovation," explains Pascal Loepfe-Brügger, citing the example of GIN 27, the Appenzell premium dry gin.

Since 1902, a liqueur has been produced in Appenzell that was once recommended by doctors as a medicine and is now the most popular bitter in Switzerland: Appenzeller Alpenbitter. 42 ingredients give it its incomparable taste, some of which come from herb women in the region.
The recipe for Appenzeller Alpenbitter is a well-kept secret. It is made from 100 percent natural raw materials without any chemical ingredients. Appenzeller Alpenbitter AG has been family-owned since it was founded, and that's how it should stay. The strategy is right: Today, Appenzeller Alpenbitter is one of the best-selling spirits in Switzerland - and one of the favourite souvenirs from Appenzell.
Seven Appenzell farming families grow herbs for Appenzeller Alpenbitter. "We sense so much passion and pride in these farmers' wives. That's exactly what it takes for Appenzeller Alpenbitter," says the producer. Lemon balm, lavender, mountain savory, peppermint and wormwood now grow in their gardens, and experience is already being gained with other herbs.
