In many of his formal approaches, Stilling starts from the rules of classical aesthetics.

The study of Greco-Roman antiquity and the Italian Renaissance, but also of Mannerism and the Baroque, have left their mark on the work of Gunther Stilling, which would have been inconceivable without his numerous stays in Italy. Stilling devotes a large part of his work to the human head. His sculptures are given an additional dimension by sharp incisions, layers and geometric additions. The "non finito" in his works, the fragment, the alternately rough and smooth surfaces visualise transience, power and violence with their fissures.
