White cooperage, woodturning and horse rides with Werner Stauffacher

Werner and Jolanda Stauffacher have been running their white cooperage and woodturning workshop in Nesslau, Toggenburg, since 1987, having started out in Sidwald. Since 1997, they have also had a base in Riet, Ennetbühl. Together with Sämi Frick from Urnäsch, Werner Stauffacher also offers horse-drawn carriage rides over the Schwägalp.

White cooperage is a traditional craft practised in farming communities. Nowadays, many everyday objects are made of aluminium and chrome steel, but wooden utensils and receptacles are still used on alpine farmsteads. A wagon loaded with these items traditionally forms part of the cattle drive down from the mountain pastures.
The products made by Stauffacher include ornaments, gifts and turned wooden items. There is a shop next to the workshop. Guided tours of the white cooperage workshop are also offered by appointment.
Incidentally, Stauffacher is currently the only firm in Switzerland to train apprentice white coopers.
