Schottensee
The Schottensee at 2335 m is part of the 5-lake hike at Pizol. Its clear water invites you to swim on summer days. The hike offers impressive views of the surrounding alpine landscape.
Whether Wildsee, Schottensee, Schwarzsee, or Baschalvasee—each of the four Pizol lakes is a gem in its own right, so unique that visitors are left in awe. The 5-Lake Hike, a true classic among Swiss hikes, takes you past all of these stunning mountain lakes. The hike begins at the Pizolhütte near Wangsersee. The ascent to Wildseelücke at 2,493 meters takes about an hour and offers magnificent views stretching all the way to Ortler and Piz Kesch. Just below the pass, at 2,438 meters, lies Wildsee, with its milky-blue water, looking almost painted into the stark, barren alpine landscape. In the background, you can spot the Pizol Glacier, Pizol summit, and the Graue Hörner (Gray Horns). A short descent leads to the Schottensee, shimmering green at 2,335 meters. Its crystal-clear waters occasionally tempt even the hardiest hikers to take a dip on a warm summer day. The trail then continues to Schwarzsee at 2,368 meters, which—unlike the previous lakes—appears dark and almost ominous. According to legend, a bull is said to dwell in its depths. Passing by numerous old Steinmannli (stone cairns), you finally reach the Baschalvasee at 2,174 meters, whose vivid green hue rivals that of the surrounding alpine meadows.
