The park near the old town

The Small or Upper Brühl, with an area of 10,790 m², originally belonged to the property of the monastery and was already used in early years as a city garden for the pleasure of the townspeople. Thus, the sides of the triangular open space were planted with avenues of trees and served the population as popular and highly frequented promenade paths.

Due to the construction of the municipal high school in the years 1852 to 1855, the strictly geometrically designed green area also underwent some changes. In 1864, a beech-lined pond was designed and an irregular network of paths was laid throughout the park.

Today, the landscape architectural elements are hardly recognizable. The trees originally planted as avenues have mostly disappeared, and the prominent fountain has been filled in. The center of the complex is defined by the large intensively used lawn. The green space has a representative effect and serves mainly the students as a place to stay and a meeting place during the breaks.
