Gebiet Chrüzbachtobel

The Chrüzbachtobel area near Vättis reveals a geological window with exposed basement rock. Here, 53,000-year-old cave bear bones were discovered. A complete stratigraphic profile from the Triassic to the Tertiary period is visible.

Near Vättis, the crystalline rocks of the basement massif (Aar Massif) have been uplifted. In the area of the dome, glaciers and streams have shaped the valley and exposed the basement rock in a "geological window." Above the region's oldest rocks lies a complete stratigraphic sequence from the Triassic to the Tertiary period. At an elevation of 2,427 meters above sea level lies the Drachenloch ("Dragon's Cave"), where remains of cave bears more than 53,000 years old and traces of fire have been excavated.
