Cistercian Monastery Magdenau

At the origin of Magdenau Abbey was an urban Beguine collection founded in 1228 in St. Gall "on the Brühl" by Berchtold Kuchimeister and Ulrich Blarer.

In 1244, the couple Rudolf and Gertrud Giel von Glattburg enabled the rapidly growing community to found Magdenau Abbey.

In the 19th century, the interior of the monastery church was renewed several times and new buildings and conversions were undertaken in the hamlet of Magdenau.

The monastery also includes buildings outside the monastery grounds, such as the mill, sawmill and the "Rössli" inn, which was built in 1792. Together with the schoolhouse and the rectory they form the hamlet of Magdenau. There is an agricultural and a fort business connected with the monastery.

Some premises are open to the public or by appointment.
