Cattle show

A beauty contest with a difference. Various livestock shows are held in the Ausserrhoden municipalities in autumn. Prizes are awarded to the most beautiful and top-performing cows.

To the delight of the throngs of spectators lining the roads, many families drive to the shows decked out in traditional Alpine style. On arrival at the venue, everyone enters through a wooden triumphal arch that has been richly decorated by the countrywomen the day before the show. The cattle are tied to long slats according to predefined categories. The jury, made up of experienced farmers, now begins its work. It judges the animals on their beauty and performance and puts them in rank order. The ranking of the animals can go on until the afternoon. The most beautiful animals are decorated with a wreath made of paper flowers. Young breeders also make a grand appearance at many shows, and their demonstrations are very popular with visitors. In the evening, after the animals have returned home, the farmers and Alpine herdsmen and dairymen meet in the hall of an inn for a run-down of the show and the handing out of prizes. Afterwards, this morphs into a down-to-earth celebration, with plenty of singing, yodelling and dancing.
