The monastery hospital probably originated in the 13th century and initially consisted only of the core building in the northwest corner (15th century) and the adjoining farm building to the east. In the course of political change, the hospital passed to the city in 1476 and was subsequently greatly expanded. In quick succession, between 1475 and 1535, three houses were added to the old hospital.
The former Spital zum Heiligen Geist comprises five buildings gathered around a courtyard, reflecting the historical development from a medieval monastic hospital to a municipal hospital and a poorhouse and orphanage.
The buildings were tastefully restored between 1999 and 2002, preserving as much of the original fabric as possible. Today they house stylish meeting and event rooms for the city and the public, the city archives, wheelchair-accessible apartments and the Tourist Office.
