Burg Friedau und Haus zur Glocke

Friedau Castle in Zizers, built by the Bishop of Chur, Volkhart, was once a center of episcopal jurisdiction. Today, it belongs to the district of Fünf Dörfer. The House of the Bell, one of the oldest buildings, formerly served as the town hall.

The building was constructed by Bishop Volkhart of Chur (1237-1251). The once powerful fortification was the center of the bishop's jurisdiction over the region. Later, delinquents from the Five Villages district were imprisoned in the castle. During the village fire of 1897, the structure was severely damaged. Today, the castle is owned by the Five Villages district. In 2001, structural safety measures were implemented. One of the oldest still-inhabited buildings in Zizers is the House Zur Glocke. It was once an inn, likely with adjoining storage buildings and stables. Later, the House Zur Glocke served as the town hall for the Five Villages district. It housed the district administration, district office, district notary, debt collection and bankruptcy office, as well as the guardianship authority. Today, the beautifully restored House Zur Glocke is used solely as a residential building.
